I have luckily been in contact with Jasmine ever since I started my Nutty4Nutrition Instagram account. It has been truly an adventure watching such an amazing person grow SO much (both physically and mentally). Jazzythings is a grade A goofball but so incredibly inspiring at the same time. She is the full package. I have watched this individual reach unsurmountable goals from placing in bodybuilding competitions, quitting her unfulfilling and draining desk job to follow her passionate dreams, and literally changing the world by working with others in my favourite field...the field of food. She has traveled the world hosting cooking and baking workshops and has created a variety of handy eBooks that are suitable for everyone. Her goals never stop and her motivation and determination is so contagious that is has earned her such a loyal and large following over all of her social media platforms. If you have not yet met Jasmine, you are about to be blown away by everything this lady continues to accomplish. And whether or not you share the same goals, interests and desires as her, you are bound to fall in love with her honest and positive mental attitude towards life.
1. Hi Jazzy! First of all, thank you for taking some time out of your busy (traveling all over the world) schedule to chat with us! My first question for you is what and when was your wakeup call to first, join the healthy living movement and then later on, become such a motivator to others?
My wakeup call happened when I was sitting at my desk job. I was stagnant and I was content. That was a horrible feeling. It was a feeling that I didn’t recognize was so detrimental to my health, both mental and physical. I was submersed in an extremely stressful job that was consuming me. I realized I didn’t have any goals beyond the deadlines I was supposed to meet at work. I decided to take a hold of that! I started going to a local gym, and I fell in love with keeping my body in motion. Our bodies are meant to MOVE, and I now look at every day as an OPPORTUNITY to take advantage of the fact that I am physically capable of moving!
In terms of aiming to be such a motivator to others, well, I would say that the flip-side is I am motivated by everyone! Social media has been an incredible tool for me to stay motivated, accountable, and receive daily inspiration. I simply started sharing a very candid look into my life, and that is what I continue to do. It motivates me, no doubt!
2. Amazing! It’s so incredible feeling the overall difference of a body in motion versus one that is not. As Jazzythings, up until this point, what was your most fearful moment and how did you overcome it?
This is an interesting question that I have never thought about. My most fearful moment…I actually think this relates to social media and opening myself up to vulnerability, specifically when I shared my first progress picture. I was nearly ‘embarrassed’ to share my progress. Fearful, not doubt. I had been working so hard and had literally been changed completely from the inside out, and I was about to share this not only with strangers, but friends who knew me best. At the time, I feared judgement, misinterpretations about my lifestyle, or who knows what. Looking back, I can see why I was fearful, but exposing my progress and my journey to the masses has been very powerful to me. It has showed me that I must own my progress and my journey. I overcame that fear by realizing this journey is for ME! I want to be the best me every single day. So long as I am striving, in some way, to be the best ME every single day, nothing else matters. Perceptions don’t matter, judgments don’t matter, opinions don’t matter…so long as I always try and be a better person (again, inside and out).
3. I love that outlook. It can be very intimidating to show the world our true selves over social media but I think I speak on behalf of everyone when I say THANK YOU for doing so. We love your honesty and never ending motivation. You have accomplished many exciting things by pursuing your passions. Congratulations on everything you have achieved so far, it really is inspiring! What does the future hold for Jazzythings?
Wow - thank you! I promise I’m just a regular girl in a regular place in this world who loves the outdoors and loves to bake! The future holds a lot that I am excited about. In general, who knows what my future holds (I left my life of complacency for a life of ambiguity and spontaneity), but in regards to projects and things I am focusing on…there are a lot! I have promised myself to never EVER remain comfortable. I challenge myself every day to get creative. What can I create? What can I create to help other people? How can I make maximum use of my time today? Those are questions I ask myself every day. I just released my sixth e-cookbook last week. It is a Kid Approved Cookbook. I had parents volunteer their kids, I got their favourite foods, recreated them in to simple and healthy (‘Jazzyfied’) versions, sent them back to the parents, and had the kiddos help recreate them and literally Kid Approve the recipes! I am so very excited about this cookbook. I am out to prove to parents that they can throw away those frozen and boxed meals and they can absolutely make simple and healthy meals for their children!!!
I am also soon releasing a ‘JazzyThings Healthy Travel Guide’ which is a compilation of literally everything I have learned and experienced in regards to traveling with meals and staying on track with goals while traveling. Also very excited about this!
I have a Crockpot Cookbook right now and am currently working on a Volume 2 Crockpot Cookbook! These recipes are a blast to make! I and been traveling around the nation every week to conduct Jazzy Workshops - sharing with as many people as possible that eating healthy is easy, flavourful, and fun. I am taking a break from traveling this summer to focus on doing local/private workshops/dinner parties and to work on content (Crockpot Cookbook recipes, and who knows what next?!).
I also LOVE to write. LOVE it. I started ‘A Dose of Jazzy’ newsletter email thingy where I can share experiences I have encountered that motivate me, inspire me, etc. I have sent two newsletters and am looking forward to continuing to have an outlet to share my writings!
These are all of my ‘professional’ goals. I am also in preparation to compete at my fourth bodybuilding show at the end of August which is another reason I am taking the summer off from travel-so I can fully dedicate my time to this commitment. It requires extremely dedication to consistent nutrition and the gym, but I LOVE it!!! It’s my “me” time.
The future also holds a lot of time at the ocean, whereas I believe a clear and happy mind is priority before any of these other things that happen! The ocean is my peace and the ocean makes me happy! I also just got a Sphynx cat (Sir Kingston). So my future holds hanging out with him! He’s awesome!
4. Those eBooks all sound incredible, especially the Kid Approved one! I have a special interest in children eating for nutrition. I believe we can change the future of our generations to come. And congratulations on the cat! You know I am a crazy cat lady so I could not be more thrilled for you! You have experienced a lot of one on one time with others hoping to better their lives through fitness and nutrition. What have you found is the biggest struggle for people to overcome while trying to build new habits? What is your best advice to overcome that struggle?
CONSISTENCY!!!! I’m not even going to sugar coat this, but the world is full of EXCUSES. FULL OF THEM!!!! I promise you, if you want something bad enough, nothing should stand in your way! People get motivated and find things that motivate them, but their goals and their motives just are not strong enough, and consistency dissolves. Seriously, allow yourself to be CONSISTENT to a goal for weeks at a time. The results themselves will motivate you! You’re HEALTH and the future of your LIFE depends on the decisions you make now! I’m so so so passionate about this topic, because being submersed in the homes of people aiming to change their lives, what lacks is CONSISTENCY! No one can instil it for you. You must dig deep and determine how valuable your health and well-being is to you. Then stick to it.
5. Consistency truly is key. It’s a very tough habit to form but we can all get there! What is the best part of your day, and why?
I love my mornings. I mentioned that peace of mind and a happy mind is my priority, it absolutely is. This begins every morning for me. I wake up early, I make my favourite breakfast, I sit in my chair outside, and I don’t even focus on what my day holds until I slowly finish my breakfast. This allows me to be extremely productive once I do begin working. If I have to be somewhere in the morning, I wake up extra early to ensure I get this ‘me’ time in the morning. I have a lot of great parts about my day, as I always strive to do what I’m passionate about and makes me happy, but I especially love my mornings!
LIFE WITH JAZZY:
1. What is your/a favourite quote?
I strive to find a lesson in EVERYTHING. If something happens that could be perceived as a ‘mistake’ or something I could have done better, I always step back and think about the lesson I can learn from that experience. I love that quote.
2. What are your hobbies?
Going to the ocean! Baking and cooking, of course. Reading. Playing games. Bowling. Camping. I’m a big fan of ‘extracurricular’ activities!
3. What is your favourite healthy recipe?
I would say my “famous” protein pancake/waffle recipe! I only quote ‘famous,’ because I have made a lot, and this is by far the most popular! Now it’s not the all-time bestest tasting recipe, but it’s my favourite because it is SO EASY! It’s also so versatile!
It’s simply a scoop of protein blended with 1/2 cup of oats and about 1/3 cup almond milk (enough to make a really thick batter). It doesn’t use eggs (although it’s great w/ eggs…ohhh it’s also awesome with some cottage cheese), and it’s just so simple! Three ingredients! You gotta top them w/ peanut butter too :-)
