I have been at this healthy lifestyle living bit for a few years now. When I first started, I had a loooooong way to go. I essentially needed to make a complete 180 in every aspect of my life. Years later, I still have a ways to go. I’m convinced and comforted in knowing that there is no end to this journey. As we continue to grow emotionally and physically, we continue to grow into the lifestyle we are striving to lead. For the longest time I focused only on dietary changes that needed to be made. That was challenging enough in itself. I was determined to mould these changes into long lasting habits so I moved very slowly. I’m a big advocate for the tortoise and the hare tale and I am proud to classify myself as a successful tortoise.
Up until very recently, articles and posts about the harmful effects of beauty care and even cleaning products overwhelmed the shit out of me. This topic was included in almost every healthy living book I read. I often skipped the entire chapter. I knew it would fluster me and I knew I wasn’t ready to make those changes. I also predicted that I would feel defeated about the personal achievements that I have made so far. I feared that I would forget about how far I have come by focusing on how far I had yet to go. I decided to wait until I felt the time was right to educate myself on all of the other hurdles I had yet to jump when it came to fully embracing a healthy lifestyle. I am glad I decided to wait because it is truly an eye opener. What we put on our body is just as important as what we put in it. Taking into consideration how long it took me to make optimal eating a habit, I know that this new chapter will take me years to master. I’m ok with that. The winning tortoise in me has fully accepted the challenge and is ready for further training.
I am actually a tad bit obsessed with creating self-care products from scratch. I find it so fascinating everything that can be created with the simplest of all natural ingredients. What blows my mind even more is how affordable it is. If I had all the time in the world, I would play in my kitchen all day long making food, self-care products, makeup and even cleaning products. I have made a few body care products now and I love them all. Although I know it is counterproductive with the makeup I wear most days, I’m working on it…I know deep down in my heart that my makeup struggles will be the very last hurdle to jump. Whether or not the foundations and such are all natural, organically made or not-I would love to reach a point where I felt I didn’t NEED to wear it. I’m only human. Project tortoise in full effect.
This recipe will have you laughing. It is so simple and easy and the cost to make it is oh so minimal. You only need a small amount so I do not recommend duplicating the recipe at all unless you are planning to hook up a friend with a batch of this green face loving toner as well. Remember that the main ingredient here is cucumber…cucumbers go bad. The toner must be stored in the fridge and that brings the blend a whole other set of benefits. First thing in the morning this treatment is rejuvenating, refreshing, and stimulating! It feels amazing. I use the toner both upon waking and before going to bed. I follow up with a small amount of my [D.I.Y Mint Chocolate Body Butter recipe].
[ D.I.Y Cucumber Face Toner ]
*Serves 1 for 7 days
Recipe inspired by my Culinary Nutrition Expert course by Meghan Telpner
- 1/4 of a large cucumber, sliced (peeled if not organic)
- 1/2 ounce of witch hazel
- Blend the sliced cucumber in a blender with just enough water so that the cucumber will fully blend.
- Once blended, strain the water and cucumber mixture through a fine mesh sieve, cheesecloth, or nut sack to rid of any pulp. This step is optional and not necessary at all. Not much pulp is created anyway.
- Once you have your pulp-free liquid, add the witch hazel and stir.
- Store in an air tight jar in the fridge.
- Use within one week.
