Coal and Canary is a Winnipeg bred business specializing in the production of luxury small batch soy blend candles. Now, what the heck do candles have to do with wellness you ask? Well, personally, I think the burning of a quality aromatic candle has everything to do with wellness. Wellness is not just limited to physical health; it also heavily involves mental health. The lighting of an enjoyable candle always accompanies activities that are warming for our mind, body, and soul. Whenever I curl up on the couch with a book (yes, usually cookbooks-they count!) and a cat, you best believe there is a lit candle nearby. When I’m cooking or baking and am completely surrendered to my zone of Zen-again, a lit candle is nearby. Some might call me selfish but I have a nice relaxing bath at least once a week. My much needed soaks always include therapeutic Epsom salts, handmade bath bombs by SoGa Artisan Soaperie, and now-my new favourite candle from Coal and Canary. Others use the calming characteristics of candles to aid them in their meditation and yoga practices. Massage Therapists often use candles and aromatherapy with their clients. The comforting warmth and glow of these solid wax bricks we call candles also play a huge role in romance. Candlelit dinners have been known to swoop ladies off their feet for longer than I have been alive. The bedroom is another popular place where candles romantically set the tone and guide couples into their passionate playtime. These examples alone play such an influential role in our general well-being.
Wellness is also not limited to our selfish human selves. We also need to consider the wellness of our planet. Tom and Amanda at Coal and Canary have managed to create a product that stands out from the rest and here’s why. The candles at Coal and Canary are made from a vegan friendly blend of soy and vegetable waxes. Each hand poured luxury candle features a crackling wood wick that is made from a blend of American hardwoods and softwoods that have not been treated in any way. Tom and Amanda take pride in their crackling wooden wicks as they are as green as possible and they burn cleaner and slower than any others on the market. The sturdy wicks do not produce any soot leaving your candles crisp and clean. And let’s talk about the sound of a crackling wick…these toxin free wicks crackle just like a well-lit fireplace would. Imagine the perfection in that. The cuties behind Coal and Canary are adamant on using true to scent fragrance oils and the quality of their soy and vegetable wax is so pure that they result in amazing scents and burn experiences.
Although Coal and Canary is a brand spanking new business, candle making is nothing new for Tom. This creative soul has been fabricating candles as a hobby for a while now and has even participated in local Farmer’s Markets in the past. Although Tom bounces back and forth between the Coal and Canary label, it is certain that he is the mastermind behind the production creation. Amanda has a consistent, solid reign over the Canary label as she is responsible for the visuals of Coal and Canary. As a professional graphic designer, she is hands down the genius behind the branding, labeling, and website designs. Together, they seem to always find a way to ensure that their fun spirited characteristics shine through their creations. You will know exactly what I mean when you read the hilarious yet adorable labels on each of their candles. They really are all about creating a quality, upscale candle brand like nobody has ever seen but they are also equally all about having fun while they do it.
The quality candles these two besties have created have shockingly only been on the market for 8 weeks now. They produced their very first Coal and Canary candle just short of 3 months ago. With that being said, they are already booming with success and recognition. They have 10 excited retailers across Canada and have also recently made their way to Los Angeles to pursue further partnerships. Tom and Amanda were recently aired on CBC Radio and an appearance on Breakfast Television immediately followed. The cherry on top of their quick success story is that they were invited to create a celebrity themed collection of votive candles to be included in the Swag Bags that will be given away at both the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards.
Tom and Amanda have created two wonderful collections thus far for our enjoyment.

I am so happy I decided to take on my Winnipeg Wellness project at this seasonal time. I have been getting all of my Christmas shopping done extra early and it feels so humbling supporting local businesses at the same time. For those who celebrate Christmas, are you all ready? If you have already supported these local cuties and their booming candle making business, what was your experience? What is your favourite candle from them? Mine is a tossup between “That Hot Barista” and “The Chunky Knit Sweater!”
